When other riders are gearing down for the winter, we are at the height of our activity. Merit Hill Stables was founded in 1983 to provide proper education to those interested in horseback riding. Instruction, training and board are available. Veterinary lay-ups, under the supervision of your veterinarian, may be arranged. We attend formal fox hunts weekly throughout the season and are active in caring for the hounds. Foxhunting is available throughout the year at foxhound field trials and behind our private pack of foxhounds. There are regular trail riding activities for riders who do not fox hunt. Kenon Ruska Having ridden for over 50 years, Kenon Ruska has 30 years experience in training riders. In the late 60's she taught western horsemanship. Since 1983, she has taught hunt seat equitation and trained show and field hunters. She is the first veterinary technician certified in Mississippi and served as an American Horse Shows Association Registered Steward from 1986 - 2001. Kenon has ridden in clinics given by the top hunt seat trainers in the United States, has competed in the jumper ring to the international level, and has trained horses and riders for shows from the local level through the "A" circuit. For the last eighteen years, she has concentrated on foxhunting. She judges and computer scores foxhound field trials throughout the Eastern United States. She judges local level hunter shows across the South. She is an honorary whipper-in for Chula Homa Hunt. In addition to her experience in the hunter and jumper rings, Kenon has trained with an international level dressage and combined training coach. Her early riding background also includes training in saddle seat riding, western riding, packing and driving. Kenon explains her teaching philosophy as explaining the 'why' as well as the 'how' of horsemanship skills, "I believe that I will not be here for all of your riding life. Therefore I try to teach you the skills that you will need to continue riding throughout your life. I expect my beginner riders to be able to groom and saddle their own horses and my advanced riders to understand training techniques and emergency veterinary nursing." |
