Fox Hunting Programs
 
 

I have hunted with 15 packs in the U.S. and England. It has been my privilege to whip in to the huntsmen of Chula Homa Hunt and The Mells Foxhounds. In the past I have served as field master for Whitworth Hunt and Chula Homa Hunt. Currently I hunt the Merit Hill Hounds and serve as whipper-in at Chula Homa Hunt.

I have been honored by being selected to judge the first FCNA field trial held in the US, Midland Foxhound Trials, The National Foxhunt Association Field Trial and The Chase Futurity. I have also judged at the July National Foxhunt, the Southeast Trigg Field Trial, and the Mississippi State, Georgia State, Tennessee State, Illinois State and Louisiana State field trials as well as innumerable local and regional field trials.


Hunt Seminar

   Each summer a hunt seminar is offered for people interested in foxhunting. Hunt protocol and etiquette are covered, along with specific exercises to help you and your horse in the hunt field. The seminar is held over two evening sessions, one unmounted, in August.     If you have an interested group out of our area, we can bring our program to you. We have recently held a Pony Club Foxhunting Seminar using a one day format and a two day clinic for Beech Grove Hunt.


Formal Hunting
    Merit Hill Stables actively supports Chula Homa Hunt. Shipping is provided each week to meets. Overnight board is available to hunters from out of town. Mounts can be provided to qualified riders.
     Merit Hill Hounds is a private, farmer pack kept primarily for providing sport for the young and the old and the not-so-bold fox hunters. Hunting is by invitation only. Season is from September through April. Private hunts may be arranged to introduce new riders or horses to hounds or for hunting out of season. Please contact us for more information.


Hunt Horse Conditioning

    It takes four to six week to get a horse fit to hunt. In July and August when temperatures soar, it is time to condition your horse for cub hunting. In our program, we condition your horse for you, using interval training and schooling over fences. At the end of the period, we pull the mane and trim your horse, so he looks as good as he feels.


Foxhound Field Trials

    Attending National Fox Hunt Association field trials allows us to extend out hunt season year 'round. Riders can accompany Kenon Garcia to follow the hounds at several outdoor foxhound trials. The most popular trials are held at Carver Point at Grenada Lake, Mississippi, and at Blackwater Recreational Area north of Pensacola, Florida. Riders who are interested may learn to judge foxhound trials. Kenon has judged at the National Fox Hunt and two of the Foxhound Club of North America (FCNA) Field Trials for formal fox hounds, as well as many state, regional and local hunts.
Private Pack


    We keep a small group few settled hounds for hunt horse training throughout the year. Please contact us if you would like to arrange a private hunt.
